La ONU pide USD 1.100 millones para combatir el ébola en RD Congo

El secretario general de la ONU, Antonio Guterres, hizo un llamamiento este jueves para obtener 1.100 millones de dólares con el fin de financiar un plan de ayuda para combatir la epidemia de ébola en la República Democrática del Congo.

El plan, que tiene un coste total de 2.100 millones de dólares, ha recibido una importante contribución de Estados Unidos, pero «sin financiamiento adicional, las operaciones vitales se quedarán sin fondos justo cuando necesitan ampliarse», afirmó.

El programa está financiado al 48%.

«Los recursos actuales durarán semanas, no meses», destacó Guterres. «Por eso pido los 1.100 millones de dólares restantes», añadió, al indicar que en el futuro «se necesitarán aún más fondos».

Desde que se declaró la epidemia de ébola el 15 de mayo, ha habido más de 5.600 casos confirmados en la RD Congo, incluidos más de 2.700 fallecimientos.

Impulsado por la rara especie del virus Bundibugyo —para la que no hay vacunas ni tratamientos—, esta epidemia es la mayor en la historia de la RD Congo.
